Dr. Perito’s Comments on FDA Panel’s Call to Loosen Restrictions on Testosterone Replacement Therapy

Testosterone replacement therapy

In light of the December 10 announcement by an FDA panel to loosen restrictions on testosterone replacement therapy, urologist Dr. Paul Perito expressed optimism, with several caveats.

“Many of the men we treat at Perito Urology and the UroFill® Clinic suffer from a range of physical and mental side effects of chronically low-T [testosterone],” said Dr. Perito. “Loosening some of the restrictions on treating them by going right to the source could help be life-changing.”

Testosterone levels in men decrease with age, typically at a rate of 1% per year at age 40. Restoring and maintaining these levels can help treat low libido, ED, fatigue, reduced muscle mass and loss of bone strength.

Dr. Perito has also seen other benefits.

“Testosterone is cardio-protective, prostate-protective, and good for your soul. My dad, a psychoanalyst, once told me that if the fund of knowledge regarding Low T existed when he was in practice, he may have successfully treated as many as 50% of his male patients once thought to be depressed.”

He does warn of misuse of the treatment, especially at non-medical facilities or from online DIY solutions.

“Testosterone treatment of any kind needs to be performed under medical supervision with appropriate testing and oversight. It’s not a one-size-fits-all solution; the only safe way and right way to do it is to have a medical professional tailor your treatment to your needs and your physiology. Otherwise, you’re playing with your health in the long- and short-term.
